Orthodontics
The ideal time for orthodontic treatment is when children are growing. Orthodontic treatment at the right stages will help correct problems before they become bigger problems later in life.
Here at Bright-On Bay Dental, Dr Janice believes that early intervention will help correct and prevent larger problems developing and usually involves simpler treatment. She has seen that in her own children and her nieces and nephews! Waiting till all the adult teeth come through is not always the best approach.
BRACES vs CLEAR ALIGNERS
We offer both braces and clear aligners here at Bright-On Bay Dental. Both these options can be used to straighten teeth. At your consultation, you can discuss with Dr Janice which option will be more suitable for you.
INTERCEPTIVE ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT
Intervening at the right time during your child’s growth can help to prevent problems from arising and developing into more complex problems. At your child’s routine dental appointment, Dr Janice checks for the following:
- Is there enough space for erupting teeth?
- Are the permanent teeth coming through at the right time?
- The relationship between the upper and lower jaw
- Are there any habits (like thumb sucking) or incorrect swallowing patterns affecting the growth and development of the teeth and jaws?
- Are there enlarged tonsils and adenoids restricting the growth and development?
In the case below, there was early loss of the baby canine teeth and insufficient space for the adult ones to come through. Delaying treatment could result in the impaction of the canines and much more complex treatment in a few years time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why have my teeth moved after orthodontic treatment?
Unless you wear your retainers for life, you can expect some movement of your teeth.
Retainers are worn after orthodontic treatment to help hold the position of the teeth achieved through orthodontic treatment. There are 2 types of retainers:
- Fixed retainers – a wire is usually glued behind multiple front teeth.
- Removable retainers – a clear removable mouthguard is usually worn at night.
